Drawn to the Light... (Art diploma project)

... Of the Screen

------------------

I was planning to go sleep after drawing that university-application comic all day.

Haha, wasn't sure if I'd even upload this one on DA as I'm not entirely happy with it but meh, what the heck. xD So yep, this is that monstrosity of a art diploma project I did for school. Started last November or December (I really can't remember. 8'D) and finished.. Well.. Uhh.. Was it in February? *Really has no sense of time* The final picture was featured at the art diploma exhibition in my hometown as a print in muuuch smaller size. Like, really small. I really would have liked to print it in larger size so all the details could be seen properly, but sadly my school didn't have equipment needed for that, so.. Oh well. ;U; But now that the exhibition is over and done with, I think I can also upload the full-size picture here. :U Some parts of the picture I'm still happy with (Like the flying skull, Blue Bubble, and the smaller pictures' backgrounds) and others.. I just don't like anymore as they were drawn quickly last year. 8I (Mainly the character linearts. Geeze, so half-assed..) But I'll live.. I think.
And yes, my tablet died in the middle of the project. The most character linearts were drawn with the barely-still-hanging-on tablet, some flat colours were done with the track pad, and then the final touches and shading were done with the new tablet. VuV Had it not broken down, I would prolly have been able to fix up the linearts after the winter break, but since it did, I really was struggling to meet the time limit. Only with minuts to spare when I finished the portfolio. :'D

But yes, there was a few themes we could choose one from. I chose the theme "Where I once walked" and the idea was to capture the essence of the places that were important to me when I was a kid. At first I was planning to draw places like the riverside where my grandfather lives and where I would fish in the summers, my friends' yard, the large birch-tree by the gates of my school and such, but heck, I thought such places EVERYONE would draw about! So I took a bit more.. fantasy-themed approach. Because to me, the worlds of videogames were always as, if not more, important as the ones in real life. So here we have.. My room, my friends' old room, my grandfather's house, our caravan and finally my own room again.
All places where from I have really specific memories related to videogames.
So.. Story time! This is stuff I didn't really explain in great detail in my portfolio, but here I could as well do so!

The first one is something prolly everyone who played Super Mario 64 as a kid remembers. The OH SO HORRIFYING man-eating piano from the Big Boo's Haunt! GEEZE, even to this day I am terrified of that thing even if I know it's pretty much harmless if you don't get too near. That one red coin just.. I never got it as a kid. Only many years later when I played Mario 64 DS, I was able to get it. Though that piano still gives me the creeps, even when watching other people play that part. *Sigh* The noise just is forever tattooed to my memory. o^o

The second one is one of my oldest memories, the day when I first met my two oldest friends (At least I THINK it was the first time. I can't remember much anymore. :'D) and we ended up going to their house and play Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was Forest Temple and the room with the block maze and Blue Bubbles. And since that day we've played sooooo many other games in that house and room too. |D From Yoshi's Island to even WiiU. Fuuun times. Though it was really tough to try to draw that room because it has since been remodeled at least once and I have NO recollection of what the room looked like back then. Nor what model the TV we used was. |D

Third comes my grandfather's house. That wooden chair/bed thing is where I always would sleep. But it was often difficult to drag me all the way from home to there. Partially because I was afraid of my dad getting too drunk as he usually did when mom was not around and then throwing up all over the place. Or that I would get sick from the smoke in the house as the fireplaces of the old OLD house let a lot of smoke in the house. But I could be talked into tagging along by offering to bring a small TV and my videogames along. This specific scene is from when I was at 5th or 6th grade, playing The Wind Waker for the first time. Back then I wasn't much good at English at all, of course, so I kept asking my dad to translate me parts I didn't understand. This was the part where Link was launched into Forsaken Fortress and he soon after found Tetra's gossip stone -necklace in his pocket. SO MUCH TEXT TO TRANSLATE. :D There still to this day is something nostalgic for me about the music of Forsaken Fortress..

Fourth picture is indeed from my family's caravan. Me and my friends used to occasionally stay there during nights and play videogames without parents telling us to go sleep. :U Well, one friend approved of that, his sister then again was there to tell us to go sleep and stop playing games all night. XD Well, on this specific day that sister got scared by a tree's branch that could be seen from the caravan's window and in the dark it looked like a creepy hand. So she decided to go back home because she was so scared. :'D So me and her brother stayed in the caravan. I just watched him play Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life until I fell asleep. And he also fell asleep while playing the game.
ANd next morning we realized the game had been running all that time. One of his sheep died but that Arceus-danged goat survived like nothing had happened!
Also here, I wanted to go in the caravan to take a reference picture of how it looks on the inside, but for some genius idea my dad had but a ladder in front of the door in autum and since it's now winter and there's a LOT of snow on the ground, the ladder is frozen to the ground before the door and you can't get inside. >.> So memory-based background there. x'D

And then we have.. My tablet! Yay! And then again my room. As seen from the edge of my bed. Oh, and my Requiem-BJD! :dummy: I decided to add him in just to symbolize my current love for Pokémon, Gijinkas and Original characters. VuV

But yeaaah. It starts from a flashing screen, and darn skippy you can be sure it will end with one too! 8U
But sheesh, now I'm sleepy. 2:30am. Gotta go sleep and work on that University-application comic. Because hey, I DO want to get there! I'd much rather study 3D animation than geology anyways. :I *Poof*

-----------
Disclaimer-thingies:
Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda -series and Pokémon belong to Nintendo.
Harvest Moon, I believe, belongs to Natsume..? Er. I think so. Maybe. But it sure ain't mine!

I hope the two people who aren't mine who do still appear in the comic won't see this. LOL. XDD Awkwaaaaaard. 8U

This is wonderful bulbie! I love how it moves from scene to scene easily and transitions nicely. Along with you drawing both the little version on the screen and the bigger picture as well, all of those little details! You captured it all fantastically <3 it's like a good ol slap of nostalgia in the face that leaves you grinning. I want to say more but derp..derpalert..overall the amount of detail is lovely, and I really like the amount of things you added in.
